Mindfulness (or mindfulness meditation) is another approach that’s becoming popular to treat health problems. It aims to help focus your attention on present-moment experiences rather than on the thoughts you may hold about those experiences. It can help us to think through our choices rather than acting on impulse when we’re feeling distressed. Pain is whatever the person says it is and exists whenever the person says it does. It is an unpleasant sensation that can be described as causing a vague discomfort or significant distress. It can be stabbing, aching, pinching, throbbing or shooting in nature. It is true that some operations, opening the chest for example, tend to be more painful than others, such as opening the abdomen. However, the causes of the variations in pain can go far beyond these simple mechanical reasons. The human body is a complex, tough structure, designed to heal itself while still being active. Your knee is the largest joint in your body, and it takes a massive force every step you take. As in all joints, the bones are coated in a layer of slippery cartilage which enables smooth, friction-free movement. If it’s torn or worn, it can leave the rough bone surfaces exposed – resulting in friction in the joint. Finding a quick fix for back pain relief can lead down a dark path of taking painkillers. This will temporarily mask the pain, but can pack a stealthy punch of potentially dangerous side effects. 4 million people in the UK suffer from chronic pain, which has a major impact on quality of life and day to day activities, such as work; however many of those people do not have their pain under control or know how to go about seeking the right treatment. Pain varies from person to person; my pain experience is unique to me and everything in my life has the potential to affect my pain There are many medical causes of nerve damage, such as the invasion of nerves by viruses, which produces shingles, or the metabolic failures in diabetes that cause a breakdown of nerve fibers. Radicular pain is often steady, and people can feel it deep in the leg. Walking, sitting, and some other activities can make sciatica worse. It is one of the most common forms of radicular pain. The aim of treatments such as Prolotherapy is to offer relief and then to enable people to return to previous activity levelsHave you ever been running through the grass then all of a sudden your foot lands on uneven ground, and you feel your ankle wrench followed by a jolt of pain? It is likely that your ankle is sprained, or twisted. Many people are suffering from chronic pain that they believe is caused by an injury that occurred several months or years ago. That doesn't make sense, because fractures of even our biggest bones will heal in several weeks. No one area has the monopoly of capturing the one and only input signal associated with pain. Learning about your pain can aid your journey towards recovery. The essence of pain measurement is to assign a value to pain. The simplest level of measurement is nominal or, in the case of pain, dichotomous (i.e., ascertaining the presence or absence of pain). This level of measurement can be useful in screening or triage situations. The nervous system learns to create chronic pain, even though there is no serious medical condition in the body, and even though any injury that may have precipitated the pain has long ago healed. People in acute pain, and especially those in chronic pain, suffer from emotional stress and depression. Consider keeping a chronic pain journal. By writing detailed notes you can help your pain treatment team identify what makes your pain better or worse, how long it typically lasts, how well pain medication is working, and any possible side effects. central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Consider an emotional pain, such as anxiety or depression. As feelings of anxiety rise, we unconsciously look for effective distractions. Pain levels vary for every individual. Pain may start out as a physical injury, but these other social and psychological factors can prolong the pain long after the injury has healed. The brain can turn off pain even when the body is injured or has some degree of tissue damage. Studies have shown treating anxiety and depression may reduce pain and improve quality of life. Speak with your health care provider if you notice difficulties with anxiety or depression.
